Val Gardena Wood Carving

Tradition meets Modern Times

True artisan craft work can be seen when you visit the local wood carving studio. Wood Carving has always been an important part of the culture in Val Gardena (Grödner Valley).

Starting around 1600, first tools were made and later artwork - mostly religious articles and sculptures. The artisan wood sculptures started having an important economic importance for the Ladin people in the late 18th Century.

Merchants and businessmen brought fame to Val Gardena by selling the craft work throughout the world. In addition to the religious motives, an extensive toy industry was developed.

Dolls of every style and size, rocking horses, animal figures and many other toys were very popular in Europe and America. Highlight: you can view the world's largest Nativity scene - and not just at Christmastime. The Iman Centre presents the display year-round. Carved by a wood carver in Santa Cristina, the display attracts many guests.

Every year in September in Ortesei (St. Ulrich), the Val Gardena Sculpture Trade Fair UNIKA is held. Regional artisans present and display their work.

We offer our hotel guests regular tours of the nearby sculpture studio, which belongs to the firm "Ferdinand Stufflesser Ars Sacra".

As one of the oldest and most traditional wood carving studios, a tour will give you great insight into Val Gardena Wood Carving.

The beautiful city, with many historical and religious buildings has roughly 19,000 residents and is the third largest city in South Tyrol.

Hardly any other city in the Dolomites of South Tyrol has the charm and flair of the old, diocesan town of Brixen.

The many wonderful shops, mostly family-run, are wonderful for a relaxing stroll or shopping tour.

Take a walk through the old town centre and view the ruins of the Brixner Cathedral.

Casually wander through the historical streets and alleys in Brixen, past many shops and original South Tyrolean restaurants and "Gaststuben", and simply enjoy your excursion.

The temperatures in winter are mild, and the summer months are warm with Mediterranean breezes.

Merano – A Great "Spa City" in South Tyrol

Known as a spa town and loved by tourist for its shopping areas, Merano is a wonderful place for our guests to visit. 

Merano, with its exclusive boutiques, gourmet delicatessen shops and valuable jewellers, is just 65 km from the hotel.

In addition to the many museums, palaces, churches and landmarks, the kurhaus, the historical city theatre and the Trattmansdorff gardens all add to the beauty of Merano and make it very interesting.

With an excursion to Merano, you can combine culture and entertainment - paired with the traditional flair of South Tyrol.

Capital City of Bolzano

The capital city of South Tyrol is just 35km away.

Discover Bolzano (Bozen) by foot:
The "Walterplatz", in the town centre, is an ideal place to start exploring. You can shop in any weather under Bolzano's arcades.

The old town centre in Bolzano has breathtaking architecture and historical houses. The fruit markets in the city are a traditional part of Bolzano's character and charm.

The Archaeology Museum is known for "Ötzi the Iceman" and is one of Bolzano's highlights.

Our Tip:
Just a few kilometres from Bolzano, in the Sigmundkron Castle, you can visit the Messner Mountain Museum, founded by the famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner.

Innsbruck – Austria's Golden Roof

The City of the Golden Roof - Innsbruck - is just 120 km away. There you will see baroque architecture from the period 1500 to 1540.

Arcades and arbours decorate and grace the city with charm. The landmark and architectural highlight of Innsbruck is its "Goldenes Dachl" or Golden Roof.

The roof, glimmering with 2657 fire-gilded copper tiles, was built by Emperor Maximilian as a wedding present for Bianca Sforza from Milan.

Today the "Museum Goldenes Dachl" can be found in the building, and it is a memorial to Emperor Maximilian I. A trip to Innsbruck is well worth it!
